Crazy for cool plants
Bali Oasis

Before
The clients were ready for a major transformation. After a trip to Indonesia, they wanted a tropical, lush oasis with seating areas and a hot tub.

Before
The back yard was in three tiers, with lawn and overgrown junipers and ivy in the rockeries.

New Stairs
After removing old shrubs and ivy, the first thing we installed was new stairs. The homeowners use them as the main house access so we wanted to build something to last. We used bluestone slabs for the project.

Install
Here we've removed lawn and ivy and added compost to the beds. We've also installed the new path, which leads to the secret hammock garden.

Hot Tub Privacy
We built a pad of concrete pavers, and a hot tub was installed. We then built the bamboo screen and set up two large containers planted with bamboo for added privacy. We later planted a row of small Evergreen Magnolia trees for added screening.

Year 2

Year 3
We wanted this garden to feel really full and lush. Above you can see how the plants matured over three years. Gunnera at the front left, Aurea Scotch Moss filling in as the groundcover, and Acorus grass and Hart's Tongue Fern along the path. Mahonia 'Soft Caress' and Sword Fern offer big and textured leaves. Bordering the bamboo screen are a row of Magnolia 'Teddy Bear' for privacy around the hot tub.

A small fountain installed by the seating area.

Along the path, Heidi's favorite Acaena purpurea shines purple along the path.

Inside the hot tub screening, a giant banana tree and the fern-like shurb, Comptonia peregrina underneath.

In the third tier, surrounding the secret hammock garden, a Heptacodium tree provides privacy and scented flowers.
